Paint category updated

All participating Resene ColorShops, Dulux paint centres, and Guthrie Bowron stores have now been added to the paint and paint container recycling map!

Paint and Paint containers map added

Markers are now being added to a new map category for Paint, and paint containers!

New navigation option added to front page

A drop down list has been added to the landing page of RecycleMap. This is to help users with finding the maps they need. For example, some users may be looking for paper recycling facilities, whilst others for cardboard recycling facilities. The drop down menu allows for both Paper and Cardboard items, linking back to the same dual-purpose map.
Additionally, there are so many more map categories to be added, this helps future-proof the website!

In other news, there are still a few more Op Shops to add, but then the next categories to come will be Paint Tins, Used Tires, and Child Car seats. Importantly, the Paint and Tire facilities will cater to domestic waste, as to industrial/commercial.

Op Shop update

Additional text has been added to the Op Shop category page, advising visitors that Op Shops require dropped off goods to be in good, saleable condition. Damaged, soiled and broken items end up having to be dumped at the landfill, which ultimately costs the charities to do so!

An acknowledgment section has also been added as a footer to the Op Shop map page, thanking the various charities that have kindly granted permission to use their logos or icons as map markers.

Mitre 10 stores added for plant pot recycling

All 80+ Mitre 10 stores have now been added to the plastic plant pot recycling map. This brings the total number of plant pot recycling locations available to 115. There are some subtle differences between Bunnings and Mitre 10 in terms of what is accepted for recycling, but both primarily are focused on clean plastic plant pots that have the #5 recycling logo on them. Mitre 10 will also take the plastic pot labels, whilst Bunnings does not (but they do take plastic stakes!)

Plastic Plant pot recycling locations added

31 Bunnings stores across the motu have been added to the plastic plant pot recycling map.

They “accept plastic plant packaging made from polypropylene plastic 5 (otherwise known as PP5). This includes all sizes of plant pots and stakes. Plant labels, even those made from PP5, cannot be recycled.”

St Vincent de Paul Op Shops added

All St Vincent de Paul Op Shops (Vinnies) have now been added to the Op Shop map category, bringing the total Op Shop markers to 601. This is all major Op Shop charities and organisations now represented on RecycleMap. There are just the smaller independent Op Shops to be added now. If you know of any that aren’t on the website, please do let me know!

The current total of markers on RecycleMap is now 2382!

Hato Hone St John Retail Stores added

All 50 Hato Hone St John retail stores have now been added to the Op Shops map category. This brings the grand total of Op Shop locations to 550!

In other news, I have also approached all main charities with Op Shops in New Zealand to seek approval to use their logos, or variations of them, as map markers, to help with the ease of use. The Salvation Army have been the first to respond with approval 🙂

For those charities where approval can’t be granted, I’m trying to make marker icons that resemble the charities, either in shape or colour etc.

Salvation Army Op Shops imported

All Salvation Army Family Stores have now been added to the Op Shop category. This rounds out the Op Shop markers to a nice round 500!

In total, RecycleMap now has 2281 marker locations and counting!

New Marker Category

I’ve added a new category – “Temporarily Unavailable” for locations that for whatever reason, are temporarily not in service. It has its own marker icon: White circle with a red cross through it

In other news, I am currently working on some performance improvements:

  • Map caching (Helps speed up load times on maps with lots of markers)
  • Clustering (Combines markers that are close together, until you zoom in)
  • Jump to location (This used to work, but seems to have issues with the Caching)
  • Show location (Again, used to work, but now shows the wrong icon when clustering is enabled)

These are just a few of the things being worked on in the background.
