Frequently Asked Questions
- Isn’t this information already available?
In short, yes, the information is out there…scattered across dozens of recycling schemes and districts. The mission of the RecycleMap project is to collect all the data for all domestic recycling schemes, and present it in an easy to use way, not constrained by any particular region or scheme.
- Why aren’t there any recycling locations in my area?
This website was created by and is maintained by me, Chris Moody. I’m not a web developer, I have a day job and a young family. It is possible I have yet to trawl the data for your area and import it. It is also possible that there simply aren’t many recycling stations in your area.
One of my hopes is that once the website is more heavily populated with data, it might be possible to analyse the data and identify areas where recycling initiatives are sorely needed etc.
- I’ve found a location not on your website, what do I do?
Please use the contact page to let me know and I’ll have the data imported as soon as possible!
- I’ve found an error with one of the locations on the website?
Mistakes happen, I’m only human. It’s also possible that a recycling scheme may have changed. Either way, please let me know via the contact page and I’ll have that mistake fixed ASAP.
- I want to help with this website/project, is there anything I can do?
There are several challenges for this website, first is locating all the recycling locations. Next up is importing that data. The final, and most important challenge, is getting the word out that the website exists. My end-goal is to have the site receive enough traffic that it almost becomes self maintaining, with new and repeat visitors submitting new or updated recycling locations, and letting me know when they get out of date.
- How Is the website put together?
The website is run on WordPress, using a Google Maps plugin that hooks into the Google Maps API to do all the fancy stuff like finding the closest recycling station based on your location. Graphics are made using AI (mostly Copilot image generator).
- Does the website cost money?
To the end user? No.
To me? Yes. The domain costs me an annual fee, and the hosting costs a small amount per month. Depending on traffic to the website, there is a chance that the Google maps API may also end up costing money.
