All district council sites now cross-checked for E-Waste, Oil, Paint and Tyre facilities!
There’s now 3309 markers across 16 map categories on RecycleMap 🙂
Only 8 more district councils to go before District Council E-Waste, Tyre, Oil and child car seat recycling facilities are on the site! It’s taking a bit of time, but I have also been refining the behind-the-scenes processes, so it’s getting easier to add new locations across categories. The time consuming part is picking through the different websites to make sure I don’t miss any locations!
(If you know of any locations not on the site, please do let me know!)
I am currently trialling a plug-in for RecycleMap that will allow users to choose to view the website in Te Reo Māori. I’m currently working out the kinks, as the plug-in seems to have issues with some special characters. In the meantime, please do check it out (Click the NZ Flag in the top right corner of the screen) and provide feedback and suggestions, I’d love to know your thoughts!
Doing my evening trawl of council websites for new recycling locations (such an exciting life I lead) and what do I find? A LINK TO RECYCLEMAP!! This marks the first time I’ve come across a link back to the RecycleMap project from a site out there on the internet. I’ve got a warm fuzzy feeling inside!
After the unfortunate fire last week at the Abilities group site, I’ve now removed the markers for their map categories. It is unfortunate, and I sincerely hope that the group is able to secure a new site and continue to do the amazing work that they do. A GiveALittle page has been set up to help the group, which employs over 100 people with disabilities.
Just a small update regarding a bug fix, where previously on some of the map pages, the site footer was appearing on marker listings, obscuring the listings. This has now been fixed!
In other news, the site is now at 3130 markers!
The map page for waste oil recycling is now live. At the time of writing it includes oil recycling locations for about 1/5 of district councils, along with Super Cheap Auto stores that offer an engine oil recycling scheme. Over the coming days I will continue to add more council facilities for oils, along with E-waste and tyres.
3041 to be precise, as of 20/04/25. Big milestone!
Still working on E-Waste, Tyres & Oils across district council facilities. Once this is done, E-Waste and phone recycling available via other schemes will be next on the list!
Car seats, with around 50 locations across the motu, is now live on RecycleMap. The scheme is run by SeatSmart, with many district councils and baby supply shops participating. 70% of the materials in car seats can be recycled (Straps, metals, plastics), but it’s a tricky thing to process, so unfortunately there are usually fees associated with dropping off your old car seats for recycling. The good news it that these fees are often subsidised!
In other news, we’re also now at 2988 marker locations, only 12 more to go until there are 3000 locations live!
