RecycleMap turns 1!

That’s right, RecycleMap turned 1 on 22nd August!

In that time, there have been 3400 unique visitors, and just under 4000 recycling location markers added across 18 map categories.

I’ve spent probably a bit over 200 hours working on this project in the evenings.

I’ve emailed all New Zealand councils twice, once asking for data, and another time updating them on where the site was at. Responses varied wildly from super supportive to super skeptical!

Also emailed a number of recycling scheme providers, supermarkets, charities etc, and had great support.

…So whats next?

There’s still a few more categories I want to add. But then I need to try my hand at marketing/advertising the site. It’s *great* that without any real advertising there have been over 3400 visitors to the site, but that’s still pretty low, and my grand vision of the site becoming self-sustaining with user-submitted locations hasn’t quite worked out. Maybe with more traffic it will?

Additionally, with almost 4000 recycling points, there’s a lot of juicy data to be analysed. It’s just begging for some spatial analysis to be performed to determine where in the country is best supported for recycling, and where is crying out for more facilities. What this space!

Round two complete!

All district council sites now cross-checked for E-Waste, Oil, Paint and Tyre facilities!

There’s now 3309 markers across 16 map categories on RecycleMap 🙂

E-Waste now live and other news

The E-waste and electrical items map is now live. I am still populating it, but there is a reasonable amount of markers to make it live. E-Waste pretty much covers anything with a battery or a plug. A sub-category includes old mobile phones. Note that many places have fees for the disposal of E-Waste, but will take phones for free.

In other news, we’re now at 2938 map markers. Very close to 3000 markers across RecycleMap!

Also, Waste Oil recycling and Childrens Car seats are still being worked on in the background. They will be coming soon, once I’ve worked through the majority of council facilities that would take them.

2045 Recycling locations and counting!

Hospice Op Shops have now been added. This brings the total number of locations on RecycleMap to 2045!
Vital stats for the different categories are:

Cardboard & Paper – 354 locations
Batteries – 258 Locations
Polystyrene – 34 Locations
Soft Plastics – 248 Locations
Glass- 336 Locations
Op Shops – 266 Locations (So far…Still have Presbyterian Support, Red Cross, St. Vincent de Paul, The Blind Foundation (Blind Low Vision NZ) and The Salvation Army Op Shops to add!)
Food and Beverage Cartons – 94 Locations
Tin cans – 350 Locations
Cosmetics – 74 Locations
Caps & Lids – 31 Locations

Caps and Lids map now live

The new recycling scheme from the Packaging Forum, Caps and Lids, is now live on RecycleMap.

Now at 1420 map markers across 10 different map categories.

28/9/24

Added data for Hastings, Hauraki and Horowhenua district councils. Now at 1366 map markers across 10 different maps.

6 Rural transfer stations(Tūtira, Poukawa, Pukehamoamoa, Maraekākaho, Waimārama, Waipātiki) not added for Hastings as there are no available addresses to pinpoint accurate locations for them. If you know where they are please let me know!

22/9/24

Added marker data for Gore and Grey District councils.

On an unrelated note, the process for manually locating and entering the marker data can be incredibly frustrating at times, but also entirely validates this websites existence. Some council transfer stations are literally not locatable via the addresses or descriptions given. Sometimes a street that is several hundred metres long is the only address (“Dave St”). Others you might be lucky and it’ll be “Corner of “Frank St” or something, but a google street view or map does not show anything in the location, so who knows if it’s there or not. I have reached out to ALL councils of New Zealand, and had a mixed response, and so the process of manually tracking down as many transfer stations as possible, council by council, continues. I will not add stations that I am not comfortable with the location for.

20/9/24

Added marker data for paper, glass and tin cans for Auckland, Gisborne, & Western Bay of Plenty.
Added battery marker data for Western Bay of Plenty.
Now at 1306 markers across 10 maps.
