RecycleMap Maps of recycling locations across New Zealand

20/01/25

Good chunk of council locations added tonight, Upper Hutt City Council and Waikato, Waimakariri, and Waimate District Councils! Only 7 more councils left before all council facilities for Paper/Cardboard, Metal cans and glass are on recyclemap!

In other news, a links section will be next in the works, with links to each councils respective recycling pages, along with links to all major recycling schemes. Then work will recommence on adding more Op Shops, as this seems to be a very popular category based on user metrics from Google!

19/01/25

Added transfer stations and resource recovery parks for Taupō, Thames-Coromandel & Timaru District Councils, and Tauranga City Council.

17/01/25

Added recycle stations for Stratford, Tararua and Tasman District Councils.

Now at 1793 markers across 9 maps, including 282 Markers for cardboard & paper, 264 for Glass, and 278 for tin cans.

12/01/25

Added South Wairarapa District Council and Southland District Council recycling locations. RecycleMap is now at 1585 location markers across 9 maps!

11/01/25

Added the South Waikato District Council recycling drop off locations.

08/01/25

Added the 7 transfer stations for South Taranaki District Council, which support Glass, plastic, cardboard, cans and battery recycling.

Added “Marker Clustering” feature, which now means in areas with a lot of recycling locations, the markers will be combined into a single icon with the number of locations indicated. As you zoom in, the cluster will break apart to show you the actual locations. This should help keep the maps clear at higher zoom levels.

07/01/25

Added Selwyn District Council recycling locations.

Fixed a number of incorrectly categorised markers.

Current statistics across all the map types currently live on the site:

  • Cardboard & Paper – 232 locations
  • Batteries – 251 locations
  • Polystyrene – 33 locations
  • Soft Plastics – 248 locations
  • Glass – 216 locations
  • Op Shops – 101 locations
  • Beverage Cartons – 80 locations
  • Cans – 230 locations
  • Cosmetics – 74 locations

This brings the total live number of markers to 1465. This is a little lower than previously reported as I now realise I’d been including the markers on a test map (whoops!).

Another interesting tid-bit is that the majority of traffic coming to the site are interested either in polystyrene recycling, or Op Shop locations.

04/01/25

Added the locations for Queenstown and Ruapehu District Councils.

03/01/25

Happy New Year!

Fixed incorrect markers/categories on the SPCA Op Shops. Also updated the categories for Polystyrene recycling facilities.

Added Spicer Landfill and “Trash Palace” from Porirua to the website.

Update 11/12/24

I realised it’s been some weeks since the last update. The RecycleMap project is still alive, but I have taken an extended break in the run up to Christmas. I hope to return to updating and adding recycling locations soon!
