RecycleMap Maps of recycling locations across New Zealand - page 2

Vacation time!

A family holiday means I’ll be unable to update RecycleMap for a few weeks, so normal service will resume at the end of July.

Mobile phones category now live!

I’m still working on populating all the different mobile phone recycling drop off locations, but with over 100 locations on the map already I decided to make it live!

Car batteries map now live!

Car batteries category is now live on RecycleMap. It has over 150 locations across the country where car batteries can be dropped off to be recycled! This takes the total number of location markers to 3588 at current!

Car batteries will be coming soon

I’m just finishing off adding all Repco stores that take car batteries for recycling, and then the Car Battery category will go live. I’ll then be adding in all council facilities and other stores that take car batteries, along with Gas cylinders, scrap metal and whiteware.

A few more map categories coming soon

I’ve added placeholders to the front page for Car Batteries, Gas Bottles, Mobile Phones, Scrap Metal and Whiteware. These are all things people have emailed about for various reasons. In the case of Mobile phones and Car Batteries, I had intended on them being covered in other categories, but found this was confusing and conflicting, as often the locations would accept one, or the other, but not both (Such as E waste not accepting Phones, or Car batteries not being accepted with Domestic batteries).

Hopefully splitting the categories out will make things easier.

Scrap metal, Whiteware and Gas bottles are all things that I’ve seen in my trawling, and would be useful to know about, so watch this space!

New Forum feature!

I’ve now added a forum feature to RecycleMap. This allows people to create user accounts and take part in discussions in a message-board format. The intent is that RecycleMap is a hub for people from all walks of life who are interested in recycling in some shape or form. Forums are excellent at facilitating communication from all corners. As such, if the forum becomes popular, it’d be pretty cool to see discussions going on between members of the public, local (and national?) government, and recycling service providers!

So please, if you’re reading this, and you’re into recycling, please do check out the forum, sign up (It’s free) and post a message!

What a day!

This morning I was on the TVNZ Breakfast show, spending 6 minutes talking about RecycleMap. The amount of interest and traffic that it generated temporarily took the site offline immediately after the interview, and when it came back it was noticeably slower for a while. This may have been something to do with the (about) 300 people trying to access RecycleMap at the same time!

The crazyness has died down and the site is now back to normal speeds, though traffic is still up (Hurrah!) – I’ve also only just finished replying to all the emails that came in today, busy busy!

In other news, it was also brought to my attention that my “Buy me a coffee” link was set to USD, which led to a nasty surprise for a generous supporter. I’ve fixed that issue so the dollar amounts should now be in NZD.

I’m still looking in to some form of discussion board or community style feature, as I feel there would be a huge benefit for everyone to be able to openly discuss recycling topics from across the country.

A bunch more markers

A bunch of caps and lids locations have been added, along with a smattering of markers from other categories.

In other news, I am currently looking in to how best to incorporate some form of discussion board, to try and foster a “community” around recycling and the use of RecycleMap. If you have any thoughts or suggestions, please let me know!

On the radio!

Todays news update is a little different, I was on The Heat radio station here in Rotorua this morning, talking about RecycleMap. Check it out! Certainly a little out of my comfort zone, but definitely feeling good that there are people out there who see RecycleMaps value and are helping promote the site!

Next map category…lightbulbs?

Coming soon to a RecycleMap near you, lightbulb recycling drop-off locations! (Thanks for the suggestion Angela!)
